Barcelona outcast Martin Montoya would be a superb addition for West Ham

West Ham United need to bring in a new right-back this summer.

Tom Thorogood

West Ham United need to bring in a new right-back this summer and one man who certainly fits the bill is Barcelona’s out of favour fullback Martin Montoya.

The Barcelona academy graduate has spent the past few months out on loan at Real Betis, making 13 La Liga appearances and averaging an impressive 3.2 tackles and 3.3 interceptions per league match.

According to a recent report in Mundo Deportivo, Montoya will not be staying at Betis beyond his loan spell as the Spanish club need to make some cutbacks and can’t afford the player’s wages.

The 25-year-old is a very capable player, and it wasn’t too long ago that he was heavily linked with a number of big Premier League clubs before having a short spell in Italy with Inter Milan.

West Ham have enjoyed a terrific campaign this past season, finishing in a respectable seventh position and thus putting themselves in a position to qualify for next season’s edition of the Europa League.

With the club set to move in to the Olympic Stadium, the club is really bouncing at present and the owners have already made some big statements ahead of potential mouthwatering signings this summer.

While a big-money striker has been sounded out, another key area to strengthen for the Hammers is at right-back as over the past few months winger Michail Antonio has fulfilled that role.

Antonio has been excellent, but he is naturally a winger and arguably his best work is going forward.

Montoya is more defensive-minded, and with his future at Barcelona largely in the balance, West Ham could strike themselves a potential bargain by bringing him to East London this summer.

The former Spain U23 international will only leave the Nou Camp for a big club, and there is no doubt that West Ham now fall into that category as they will look to challenge for the top four next season.

West Ham and Swansea set for personal terms talks over defender transfer

A lot of players from Ligue 1 have been repeatedly linked to West Ham United, especially after the impact Dimitri Payet has made at the club. It's no secret West Ham are interested in signing Marseille star Michy Batshuayi, and also Lyon's Alexandre Lacazette, but the club from London are also keen on a Paris-Saint Germain star.

On Saturday, according to French newspaper L'Equipe, West Ham and Swansea have already made a 'practical' approach to sign Grégory Van der Wiel in the summer. The Dutch international is a free agent in the summer, and is generating interest from several clubs in Europe, but prefers a move to England.

The 28-year-old spent most of the season on the bench for PSG, as Serge Aurier has been preferred ahead of him, despite his recent controversy with Laurent Blanc. In any case, Grégory Van der Wiel should be a good signing for Swansea or West Ham on a free transfer, and it's a gamble worth taking.

Any talks will be about personal terms, because there's no transfer fee to pay.

Valencia; West Brom update

Enner Valencia not be joining West Bromwich Albion in the summer.

However, ClaretandHugh has learned that sources keen to the player are keen to move him on to an interested clubs in Europe.

We were told that although the player’s contract has another three years to run the club are ready to listen to offers close to the £12 million the Irons paid for the Ecuador international.

However, a move to the Hawthorns isn’t even an option with a source close to the player saying: “There has been no contact and no enquiry. That is just the media at work.

“The suggestion was anyway that Albion would want a knock down deal or even a loan and neither would be acceptable to either the club or player.”

Valencia is – as reported in the past on this site – more likely to find himself heading for China – but at this stage there has been no contact.

We were told: “It’s too early to be talking deals but we don’t expect there to be any shortage of interest or takers once the window opens.

However, it’s all rather sad because however you want to look at it when he and Diafra Sakho were West Ham’s front two they looked a very potent attacking force indeed last season.”

Hammers will listen to midfielder bids

Napoli are again being reported as being ready to to bid for Pedro Obiang in the summer transfer window.

A report in www.calciomercato.it claims that the Serie A team hope to lure the 24-year-old away from the Premier League with the promise of regular first team football.

And this morning (Sat) ClaretandHugh was told by insiders at West Ham that that the club would be ready to listen to sensible offers.

Obiang has become frustrated with his lack of first-team starts for the Hammers and Napoli have been monitoring his situation for weeks.

The report claims they would test the Hammers with a £7m bid. Although the Spanish midfielder recorded 24 appearances in a claret and blue shirt this season, thirteen of these were as a substitute and his 1,079 minutes on the pitch is equivalent to just 12 games. Obiang scored no goals and made one assist.

Obiang was Slaven Bilic’s first signing in June 2015 paying Sampdoria for £4.5 million in return for a five-year contract.

Everton have put a price tag of over £ 23 million on Ramiro Funes Mori, yet reportedly we would be happy to accept in excess of £ 7 million for James Tomkins. Something seems amiss.

Have always said this Chinese league could be great for hoovering up unwanted Premier league players for good money.
Valencia to China for something near what we paid would be great business.
